Chapter 9

New House and a New Baby

“This place is beautiful!” Scarlet told the real estate agent as she gazed at the two-story brick home. There was so much land in the view of her eyes before she even stepped in the house. When she did enter the home, she noticed the beautiful marble hardwood floors within the entrance, and the living room had carpet. The house had four bedrooms and two point five bathrooms. It was larger than what she expected, but with the housing market, that point in time was the best time to purchase a home. The bathrooms were huge and had garden tubs, just like she wanted. The closet space in the bedrooms was ridiculous.

“I love this house; it’s perfect for me. How much do you want for it again?” Scarlet waited for the real estate agent to let her know before she started negotiating.

“This home is $250,000,” the real estate agent said in an unhopeful voice, almost as if he thought she couldn’t afford it or something.

“Okay. Well, let me call my fiancé with the price. We’re buying it today,” Scarlet said because she wanted to wipe that smirk off the real estate agent’s face. He wasn’t used to people being able to buy houses upfront like that without a bank being involved, so this was all new to him, especially for an African American girl. He was no racist, but with a belly like hers, he couldn’t help but wonder where she got the cash from because he knew she wasn’t working anywhere that far along in her pregnancy.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what is it exactly that you and your fiancé do for a living?” he asked, waiting to see if it would take time for her to think about it or if she would answer instantly.

“He does construction and landscaping,” she replied. She knew it would be easy as hell to get references for jobs like that because they usually paid under the table. Devin could write a statement saying that Cash was an independent contractor, and they would be good to go.

The real estate agent appeared to be impressed, just knowing that Scarlet was pregnant and her fiancé was carrying the load fully by working two jobs. He was more than willing to sell them the house, without putting them through the extra stuff, because he didn’t run into too many couples that were willing to do the right thing and make an honest living to provide for their family.

She called Cash anyway to have him send over written documentation stating what he did for a living and how much money he made, just so that they could reassure the real estate agent that they could afford the full payment for the home.

“Hey, baby; I need for you to send over that statement from your boss, Devin, and he needs to type up the income you bring in from both jobs, the construction gig and the landscaping gig,” Scarlet said, not
